What is the DVA Points System?
The system assesses Permanent Impairment (PI) compensation under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 (MRCA). It assigns points based on the severity of service-related injuries or illnesses to determine eligibility for lump sums or ongoing payments.
To qualify for PI compensation:
Permanent Impairment Points (MRCA) vs. DVA TPI: What’s the Difference?
Comparison: Permanent Impairment (MRCA) vs TPI Pension (VEA)
Permanent Impairment (MRCA) | TPI Pension (VEA) |
---|---|
Uses points (0-100) to assess injury impact on daily life. | Assesses work incapacity (no points system). |
Initial assessment requires 10+ impairment points for payment. | Requires total inability to work due to service conditions. |
Offers lump sums, periodic payments, or both. | Provides tax-free, ongoing payments. |
How DVA Points Are Calculated

The DVA points table assigns points based on the severity of impairment and the type of service (warlike/non-warlike or peacetime).

Note: The DVA points table considers the type of service when calculating payments. Warlike/non-warlike service results in higher compensation at the lower points scales compared to peacetime service, however at the higher thresholds such as 80 points, levels out to be the same.
Can Compensation Be Taken as a Lump Sum?
Veterans entitled to Permanent Impairment compensation can choose to receive payments as:
Once a lump sum is chosen, the decision cannot be reversed. Veterans are encouraged to seek financial advice before making a decision.
What If My Impairment Gets Worse?
If a veteran’s condition worsens, they can request a reassessment to increase their Permanent Impairment (PI) compensation. A new evaluation is possible if their impairment rating increases by at least 5 points, with additional compensation available for those reaching 80 or more impairment points.
Under MRCA, the DVA Points System assesses PI compensation, while DVA TPI points under VEA determine eligibility for the TPI pension. Compensation under MRCA is calculated using the DVA points table, considering impairment level, lifestyle impact, and service type. Veterans can choose between lump sum payments, periodic payments, or a combination of both. If their condition worsens, they can apply for reassessment to secure additional benefits.
