DVA Rent Assistance: Eligibility and How to Apply

Mar 4, 2025

Finding a stable and affordable housing is a key part of transitioning to civilian life. If you’re a veteran receiving a means-tested pension, you may be eligible for DVA Rent Assistance. This extra financial support helps veterans and their families manage rental expenses and maintain secure housing.

DVA Rent Assistance Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for DVA Rent Assistance, you must:

  • Receive a Means-Tested Pension – This includes the Service Pension, Income Support Supplement, Veteran Payment, or Social Security Age Pension provided by DVA.
  • Reside in Australia – You must be living within the country.
  • Pay Private Rent – Renting from private landlords or organisations, excluding government (public) housing.
  • Meet Minimum Rent Thresholds – Your rent payments must exceed a specified amount, which is adjusted periodically.

Additionally, students receiving an education allowance from DVA may be eligible for Rent Assistance.

Exclusions

You are not eligible for Rent Assistance if you:

  • Pay rent to a government housing authority.
  • Own or are purchasing the home you live in, with certain exceptions.
  • Have a long-term accommodation arrangement, such as a life interest from a deceased estate.
  • Live overseas, either permanently or for extended periods.
  • Reside in a government-funded aged care facility.
  • Paid an entry contribution exceeding a specified limit to live in a retirement village.
  • Receive an incentive allowance from Centrelink.
  • Pay rent below the minimum threshold.

For families with dependent children under 16, Rent Assistance is typically included in the Family Tax Benefit, administered by Services Australia.

The DVA Rent Assistance Application Process

Applying for DVA Rent Assistance is a simple process, but it’s important to ensure your details are up to date to avoid delays in receiving support.

For New Pension Applicants

If you’re applying for a means-tested pension through DVA (such as the Service Pension or Income Support Supplement), your eligibility for Rent Assistance will be automatically assessed as part of your application. If you meet the criteria and pay private rent, the assistance will be included in your pension payments without needing a separate application.

For Current Pension Recipients

If you’re already receiving a DVA pension and experience a change in your living situation—such as moving to a new rental property or adjusting your accommodation costs—it’s essential to inform DVA as soon as possible. This allows them to reassess your eligibility and adjust your Rent Assistance accordingly. Delays in reporting changes could impact your payments, so it’s best to update your details promptly.

To update your information, you can:

  • Use the MyService online platform.
  • Complete the general enquiry form on the DVA website.
  • Call 1800 VETERAN (1800 838 372) and state “Rent Assistance” when prompted.
  • Visit a DVA Veterans’ Affairs Network (VAN) office in person.
  • Mail your details to:
    Department of Veterans’ Affairs
    GPO Box 9998
    Brisbane QLD 4001

Ensure you provide proof of your rental arrangements, such as a lease agreement or rent receipts, to facilitate the assessment process.

Obligations

While receiving Rent Assistance, it’s essential to:

  • Report Changes Promptly: Notify DVA within 14 days (28 days if residing overseas or in remote areas) of any changes in your circumstances, including:
    • Residential address changes.
    • Alterations in rent amounts.
    • Changes in relationship status.
    • Overseas travel or relocation.
    • Income or asset changes that may affect your payment rate.

Staying informed and proactive ensures you receive the support you need without interruptions.
